ABOUT

Tenant From Zero is the musical persona of Paul Darrah, a Brooklynite who transforms his own personal affairs of the heart into the form of elegant pop songs. His debut album Flight was released in January 2021, marking the fulfillment of a long musical journey.

Although strikingly modern, the sound of Flight will doubtlessly resonate with longtime fans of sophisticated British pop. “I modeled my voice whether consciously or unconsciously on David Sylvian, and Tracey Thorn from Everything but the Girl,” Darrah told music blog Fadeawayradiate in 2017. “There is a particular melancholic quality in their voices that has always moved me. After decades of listening, their voices are in mine now.”

In 2018, Darrah began work on the sessions for Flight. The album’s official start was a five-day writing/recording session with producer Ole Johannes Åleskjær (The Loch Ness Mouse, Gary Olson) at Tune-J Tonstudio in Hayland, Norway. The sessions yielded six tracks co-produced by Åleskjær and Darrah. Later, Darrah completed an additional trio of songs at Marlborough Farms in Brooklyn, a recording studio owned by Gary Olson of The Ladybug Transistor. Olson contributes a gorgeous trumpet solo to the album track “After.” The entire album was mixed by Jorge Elbrecht (Ariel Pink, Tamaryn, Violens).

Flight, and a previous mini-album, The Nape of Your Neck, are available digitally on iTunes, Amazon and Bandcamp.
